Mount Abang

MOUNT ABANG

Being able to catch sunrise at 1,717m above sea level on top of Mt Batur was really nice. You get to see the caldera, the monkeys that are living there, as well as being able to cook breakfast (eggs) in the crater (it's an active volcano) was really worth the 2-hour hike that starts at 4am (pickup from the homestay at 2am!). The mountains in the foreground are Mt Abang and Mt Agung, which is the highest point in the island of Bali at 3,031m.

Mount Abang sits on the edge of Lake Batur, facing Mount Batur across the water, in the Bangli region of northeast Bali. It a dormant volcano with the third tallest peak on the island and the tallest jungle mountain, its slopes covered in natural rainforest. Abang was once part of Batur, but was separated by an enormous volanic eruption in prehistoric times.

Mount Abang is not as famous or as well-trodden as Mount Agung or Mount Batur, and is therefore much less disturbed by human development. The path to the summit has a few Balinese temples along the way, as local Balinese Hindus often come to the mountain to pray.
